1991 Triathlons and Commuting

I kept going for most of the year with 148 days of training and a number of events. These included:-

Burnham on Sea Duathlon
Wimborne Triathlon
Bath Triathlon
Dorchester Triathlon
Theale Triathlon
Bryanston Triathlon
Salisbury Century ride.

Cycling.

At this stage I had two bikes – my Claude Butler (Claude) and my Dawes Countryman (Di) bought in 1988 specifically to cycle to work. Both were regularly upgraded with bits mainly from PDE Cycles in Yeovil.

Much of my cycling involved commuting to my work at Yeovil College. I used Di for most of this commuting. I had had a new set of wheels built by PDE cycles in Yeovil with the leaving gift from Saint Francis School and these stood me in good stead and are still fitted to the bike in 2021.

Claude went through another of his incarnations with a lighter set of racing wheels and also aero-bars. I initially bought a pair of one piece Profile aero bars but these snapped as I pulled on them to climb Brassknocker hill on the Salisbury Century ride. I replaced them with a set of bolt-on bars. These are still in the garage! (IMAGE)

Running

Most of my running was from home with a couple of “Favourite” routes through the hamlet of Littlewindsor. I am going to try and use MapMyRun to produce profiles of these runs. As these are dynamic links you will need to consider cookie settings.

The “short” course was just under 2.5 miles and my best time was just under 20 minutes.

The long course was just over 4 miles with some climbs and my best time was just under 35 minutes.

My best running achievement outside actual events was the Seaborough Hill Challenge on the 22nd May. This was 5.75 miles and I completed it in 47mins 10 seconds (average 8 min 12 sec miles) . Both John and Val Muskett completed this run too.

During the year I ran for a total of 355 miles with two pairs of shoes – one Adidas which I don’t remember and a pair of Nike Air shoes which I remember buying from a running shop near Exeter Central station.
